History
KAZKA works the seam between Ukrainian folk singing and clean electronic pop. The arrangements are modern, programmed drums and synth pads, but the vocal line keeps the ornamentation and the open, ringing tone of village singing, and flute figures run through the tracks where a guitar hook would normally sit. "Плакала" carried that combination out of Ukraine in 2018: a grieving lyric over a light, danceable beat, the contrast doing most of the work. The song spread through short video clips and covers, reached the top of Shazam's global chart, and made a Ukrainian-language track a hit in countries with no Ukrainian audience. "Свята" and "Дива" show the wider range, one closer to ritual song, the other to straight pop. A listener recognises the band by the voice first, high and slightly nasal in the folk manner, sitting on production that stays deliberately cool underneath it. Almost everything they release is in Ukrainian, which was a commercial risk before the song and stopped being one after it.
