History

Kauan makes slow, melancholic music where post-rock, doom, neoclassical strings and folk melody melt into long, cinematic pieces. The project was started in Chelyabinsk by Anton Belov and later settled in Estonia, and although its roots are Russian it sings mostly in Finnish, a choice that gives the vocals a soft, distant quality. Early work leaned toward folk doom, but over the 2010s the sound opened up into something closer to ambient post-rock: clean guitars that swell into walls of sound, violin and piano, hushed voices and very gradual builds. Pirut in 2013 showed that direction, and Sorni Nai in 2015 took it furthest, a concept album about the Dyatlov Pass incident of 1959, when a group of hikers died in the northern Urals under unclear circumstances. Kaiho in 2017 continued in a quieter, more intimate vein. What sets Kauan apart is the snowy, wintry atmosphere, the patient crescendos, the mix of acoustic and heavy textures and a sadness that never tips into aggression.
