History
Katatonia started as one of the bleakest death-doom bands in Sweden and gradually turned their melancholy into something quieter and more melodic. The band was formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström, who have remained its core. The debut album Dance of December Souls, released in 1993, mixed slow doom riffs, harsh vocals and a raw, black-metal-tinged atmosphere. Brave Murder Day in 1996 simplified the formula into repeating, hypnotic guitar lines and featured Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth on growled vocals. By the end of the decade Renkse had moved to clean singing, and the band shifted towards a darker, atmospheric form of alternative rock and metal, heard clearly on Viva Emptiness in 2003. That change alienated some early fans but defined the band for later ones, and they became a reference point for melancholic metal in general. Across every phase, listeners recognise Katatonia by the same things: a grey, rainy mood, guitar melodies that circle rather than resolve, and Renkse's low, resigned voice once he stopped growling.
