History
Kammarheit is the dark ambient project of the Swedish musician Pär Boström, known for some of the most patient, spacious records the genre produced in the 2000s. The music works with deep, slowly shifting drones, field recordings of wind, water and resonant rooms, and a sense of vast emptiness rather than horror. Where much dark ambient reaches for menace, Kammarheit reaches for stillness and awe, the feeling of standing in a cold cathedral or at the edge of night. The albums Asleep and Well Hidden and The Starwheel established that reputation and circulated through the Cyclic Law label, a key outlet for the style. After a long quiet stretch the project returned with Thronal in 2020, which picked up the same meditative thread. Boström has also worked under other names, including Cities Last Broadcast, but Kammarheit remains the best known of his projects. Its signature is the slow, tidal movement, the natural acoustics folded into the drones and a single low tone allowed to hang for minutes.
