History

Kacey Musgraves came out of small-town East Texas writing country songs that took the form seriously and its pieties not at all. Her early records paired pedal steel, banjo and an unhurried two-step with lyrics about boredom, hypocrisy and the narrow options of a place everyone is expected to love: "Merry Go 'Round" is the sharpest of them, a verse structure that keeps circling back the way the town does. Then she changed direction. "Golden Hour" swapped the irony for something warm and open, brought in vocoder, a disco pulse and soft-focus production, and still kept the pedal steel audible underneath, which is why it read as a country record even to people arguing that it was not. It won Album of the Year at the Grammys in 2019. "Slow Burn" and "Rainbow" mark its two poles, one drifting and conversational, the other a plain piano ballad. Her voice is light and unbelted, and she uses that plainness deliberately, letting the writing carry the weight.
