History

Just Blaze made some of the biggest-sounding hip-hop beats of the 2000s, pairing pitched-up soul samples with thunderous drums and brass that feel built for arenas. He comes from New Jersey and became one of the in-house producers at Roc-A-Fella Records alongside Kanye West, and together they helped make the sped-up soul sample, later nicknamed chipmunk soul, the signature of the label's sound. On Jay-Z's The Blueprint in 2001 he produced tracks including "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "U Don't Know", and he went on to make "Public Service Announcement" for The Black Album. For Cam'ron he produced "Oh Boy" in 2002, built on a looped, high-pitched vocal sample, and he worked with many other rappers of the era, including Joe Budden on "Pump It Up". Where some soul-sample producers aimed for warmth, Just Blaze aimed for impact: huge snares, dramatic horn stabs, sudden drops and builds. In the 2010s he moved closer to electronic music, releasing "Higher" with Baauer in 2013. His beats are known for that triumphant, stadium-sized punch.
