History

Junior H sings corridos the way someone sings to themselves: low in the throat, half swallowed, with none of the brassy projection the older regional Mexican styles demanded. He belongs to the corridos tumbados wave that came out of the Mexican diaspora at the end of the 2010s, where the traditional guitar-and-tuba lineup stayed in place but the subject matter and the mood shifted toward loneliness, insomnia, money and doubt. His arrangements are sparse: a requinto picking out the melody line, a twelve-string strumming underneath, bass or tuba marking the walk, and long unhurried tempos that leave space around the voice. "El Azul", a duet, carried the style onto global charts in 2023 and introduced a lot of listeners to a corrido that sounded closer to a sad rap record than to a banda standard. "Y LLORO" is the purer version of what he does alone. Listeners recognise him by the delivery, flat and unhurried, almost muttered, as though the guitar had to lean in to hear it.
