History

Julio Voltio rapped reggaeton with a rough, gravelly voice and a streetwise sense of humour that set him apart from the smoother singers of his generation. He came up in Santurce and Carolina, Puerto Rico, and as a teenager co-founded The Masters of Funk with Héctor el Father and Rey 29, one of the crews that fed the island's 1990s underground. His solo records, from Voltage AC (2004) to En lo Claro (2007), leaned on hard dembow and plain-spoken barrio storytelling. His biggest hit, "Chulín Culín Chunfly", paired him with Residente of Calle 13 and later drew a Three 6 Mafia remix, a rare crossover into Southern hip hop. He worked closely with Tego Calderón and cut "No Amarres Fuego" with Zion & Lennox. What stands out is the hoarse bark, the jokes slipped between hard lines and the old-school rap edge he kept even as reggaeton went pop. In 2014 he stepped away from reggaeton after converting to evangelical Christianity.
