History
Julianna Barwick builds music almost entirely from her own voice, looping short, often wordless phrases into shimmering choral layers that swell and dissolve like light through a church window. She grew up singing in church in the American South and Midwest, and that early choir experience shows in the way her pieces feel like hymns without a text. Working in Brooklyn with a loop pedal and generous reverb, she developed a method in which a single breath becomes a harmony and then a whole landscape. The Magic Place, released in 2011 on Asthmatic Kitty, brought her wide attention with its slow, glowing vocal clouds and occasional piano. For Nepenthe in 2013 she recorded in Iceland with producer Alex Somers, adding strings and a girls' choir that made the sound fuller and more melancholy. Will in 2016 introduced more synthesizer and darker tones while keeping the same devotional calm. Listeners recognise her by the sense of scale she achieves with so little: one voice, multiplied, turning into a sacred-sounding space that sits between ambient, choral music and pop.
