History
Juan Gabriel wrote in almost every popular Mexican form and made them all sound like his own: ranchera with mariachi, the bolero, the disco-leaning pop of the early 1980s, the slow ballad. He came up in Ciudad Juarez with no formal training and an enormous output, and a large part of the Mexican songbook of the second half of the century passed through him, often sung first by other people. His own performances were theatrical, loose and physically extravagant, at odds with the conservatism of the genres he worked in, and audiences accepted it completely. "Querida" is the song built on repetition, a single word returned to until it turns into an event. "Amor Eterno" is the other pole, written about a death in his own family and adopted by the country for its funerals and memorials. What listeners recognise is the phrasing: a voice that is not technically large, pushed hard and allowed to break, with the weight placed on the word rather than on the note.
