History
Juan Atkins is the point where Detroit techno starts. Working first as Cybotron and then alone as Model 500, he took the machine funk of European electronic records, the rhythmic sense of Parliament and a science-fiction reading of his city's industrial decline, and built a music with no obvious parent. "Clear" and "Techno City" belong to the Cybotron period, still recognisably electro, with vocoded vocals and a snapping drum machine. "No UFO's" is where the solo template lands: a hard, dry kick, a bassline that repeats without variation, and chords placed high and sparse so the track stays cold. He ran his own label out of Detroit and issued the first records by the people who followed, which counts for as much as the music does. What a listener recognises is the restraint in the arrangement, very few elements, almost no build, and the sense that the track was already running before the record started and will keep running after it stops.
