History

Johnny Maddox was a Tennessee pianist who kept honky-tonk ragtime alive in the decades after its first heyday and brought it to a mass audience in the 1950s. Recording for Dot Records, he played old rags, cakewalks and popular tunes in a bright, bouncy style, often on a piano with a tinny, saloon-like sound that evoked the turn of the century. His biggest success was "The Crazy Otto Medley", his American version of a medley made popular by the German pianist known as Crazy Otto, which became a major hit in 1955 and put old-time piano on radios across the country. Pieces like "St. Louis Tickle" show his approach: steady stride-like left hand, clear melodic right hand and a cheerful, danceable pulse rather than a concert reading. He went on to make many albums and spent decades performing ragtime and early popular music, and he was also known as a devoted collector of old sheet music and recordings. Listeners recognise his records by that jangly upright sound and a relaxed, good-humoured drive.
