History
Joe Hisaishi writes melodies a child can hum and an orchestra can carry for four minutes without tiring. Trained in Japan and drawn early to minimalism, he kept the repeating cells and patient harmonic movement of that school and put them at the service of film, above all the animated features of Hayao Miyazaki, whose major works he scored. His signature is a piano theme stated simply, then handed to the strings and expanded until it becomes the emotional argument of the scene. Merry-Go-Round of Life is a waltz that keeps circling back and lifting a step each time. One Summer's Day works the opposite way, almost motionless, built on space rather than movement. Summer, written for a different director, became the piece that made him a concert draw in his own right. He conducts his own scores, which gives the recordings a particular rubato, and the mix of clarity, restraint and sudden orchestral bloom is recognisable within a bar.
