History
Jess Glynne has the kind of voice that house producers spent the 2010s looking for: big, slightly raw at the top, gospel-shaped but singing pop. She arrived through features rather than a debut single, most famously on Rather Be, where a string riff and a four-to-the-floor kick left a lot of space for a vocal to fill, and on other dance records that used the same formula. Her own songs kept the tempo but moved the emotional weight forward. Hold My Hand is built to be sung back by a crowd, and Don't Be So Hard on Yourself turns a fairly plain piece of self-talk into something like a chorus of encouragement. She holds an unusual place in British pop history for the sheer number of singles she took to number one, most of them dance-pop rather than ballads. The recognisable part is the grain in her voice at volume, and the way she lands slightly ahead of the beat on a chorus, pulling the track with her rather than riding it.
