History

Jerry Butler sang Chicago soul in a deep, smooth baritone so unhurried that a Philadelphia DJ, Georgie Woods, nicknamed him The Iceman. He was the original lead singer of the Impressions and co-wrote their first hit, "For Your Precious Love" in 1958, a slow, church-toned ballad. He then went solo on Vee-Jay, and "He Will Break Your Heart", written with his former bandmate Curtis Mayfield, reached the top ten in 1960. Duets with Betty Everett, including "Let It Be Me", added to a long run of pop and R&B chart entries. At Mercury in the late 1960s he worked with the Philadelphia songwriting team of Gamble and Huff: albums such as The Ice Man Cometh and Ice on Ice, and the hit "Only the Strong Survive", gave his voice lusher arrangements and stronger material. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Impressions in 1991, and for decades he also served as a Cook County commissioner. He died in 2025. What stays with listeners is the calm, velvet baritone and ballads delivered with complete composure.
