History
Jean-Jacques Goldman holds a place in French popular music with no obvious equivalent elsewhere: a songwriter whose melodies are known by practically everyone in the country and who withdrew almost entirely from public life. His own records sit between chanson and straightforward guitar rock, plainly sung, with lyrics that avoid poetic difficulty and say what they mean. Je te donne alternates French and English verses and became one of the most recognised songs of the 1980s in France. Puisque tu pars is the slow counterpart, a farewell built on a repeating figure and a chorus an audience sings without being asked. Envole-moi drives harder and sits closer to rock radio. He also wrote extensively for other performers, and much of Celine Dion's French language catalogue came from him, which is how his writing reached listeners who could not name him. He has long been associated with the charity concerts of Les Enfoires.
