History
Jazmine Sullivan sings with a gospel trained instrument and a storyteller's instinct for the unflattering detail. She grew up in Philadelphia and came in through church and the local scene, and the range is the first thing anyone notices: a full bodied low register, a belt that stays clean at volume, and a habit of dropping into a conversational tone mid line when the lyric calls for it. Bust Your Windows introduced her with a revenge narrative sung over a dramatic, almost theatrical arrangement. After years away from releasing she returned with writing that cut closer to the bone, and Heaux Tales framed its songs around spoken interludes of women talking plainly about sex, money and self regard. That album won the Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2022. Pick Up Your Feelings is the sharpest example of her method, a dismissal delivered without ever raising the volume. Her records sit in R&B while the phrasing comes from soul and gospel.
