History

Jamie Berry works in the dance-floor end of electro swing, cutting 1920s and 1930s swing and jazz into house and breaks with shuffling modern drums and heavy, wobbling bass. He comes from Lincolnshire in England and built his following from a base in Leeds, where the British electro swing scene has a strong club and festival presence. The track Delight, made with the singer Octavia Rose, became one of his best known productions, and the Swing It EP (2013) showed the formula at full strength: brass stabs and vintage vocal phrases chopped over a bass line that owes as much to breakbeat and bass music as to jazz. That weight in the low end separates his work from the lighter, more nostalgic side of the genre. He played UK festivals such as Beat-Herder and Boomtown and toured regularly across continental Europe. A Jamie Berry track gives itself away with the swing samples up front and a bass that hits like a club record rather than a gramophone.
