History

James Ferraro made records that treated consumer technology as both subject and sound source, and in doing so laid much of the groundwork for vaporwave. The American artist first surfaced in the noise and lo-fi underground, including the duo The Skaters, and through the late 2000s released a flood of hazy cassettes and CD-Rs that critics grouped under hypnagogic pop. His turning point was Far Side Virtual (2011), an album of crisp, General MIDI-like tones, ringtone melodies, cheerful synth marimbas and interface chimes, arranged like soundtracks for smartphone adverts, sushi bars and online shopping. Its bright, artificial surface read as both celebration and satire of digital life, and it became a direct reference point for the vaporwave producers who followed. Sushi (2012) moved toward club rhythms and grime-tinged beats, while the Human Story series, including Human Story 3 (2016), returned to orchestral, synthetic textures and themes of technology and ecology. Ferraro is recognised less by a single sound than by a sensibility: glossy, uncanny and pointed at the present.
