History

J Hus found a way to make British rap swing. Growing up in east London with Gambian roots, he pulled dancehall bounce, West African percussion and the bluntness of grime into one loose melodic style that the press eventually labelled afroswing, and after him a UK rap record was allowed to sound relaxed. His voice switches without warning between a half sung hook and a flat, deadpan bar, and a joke arrives on the same breath as a threat. "Did You See" is the clearest case: a light skipping rhythm carrying lines about status delivered as if he were shrugging. Common Sense set the template, and Big Conspiracy pushed it darker and more interior without losing the groove. Around him a generation of London artists took the same rhythmic freedom, and the sound moved out of clubs and onto daytime radio. A listener recognises him by that swing and by the unbothered tone laid flat across the top of it.
