History

Ivan Dorn took Russian-language pop somewhere it had not been: into funk and nu-disco played with a straight face, with a thin falsetto floating over live-sounding bass and dry, close-miked drums. He came out of Ukraine and out of a conventional pop duo before the solo records, which partly explains how comfortable the early material is with a hook, and Co'N'Dorn in 2012 established the manner. Stytsamen is the clearest example, a chorus built on a nonsense word carried entirely by rhythm, where the syllables function as percussion rather than as meaning. Bigudi works the same way, a slow groove and a lyric that keeps refusing to become a statement. Later albums moved further toward jazz harmony, soul phrasing and electronic production, and away from radio format altogether. The recognisable signature is the pairing of a very relaxed vocal with a rhythm section that is doing all the work: pop written by someone listening to dance records rather than to other pop singers.
