History

Irina Ponarovskaya (born March 12, 1953, Leningrad) is a Soviet and Russian jazz and pop (estrada) singer, film actress, and television host. Born into a family of musicians, she studied harp and piano at a specialized music school and entered the Leningrad Conservatory in 1971. That same year she became lead vocalist of the vocal-instrumental ensemble Poyushchiye Gitary (The Singing Guitars), performing with the group until 1976 and, in 1975, singing Eurydice in the Soviet Union's first rock opera, Orpheus and Eurydice. Her international breakthrough came at the Sopot song festival in Poland in 1976, where her performance of "Molba" earned the Grand Prix and nine curtain calls, an unprecedented breach of festival protocol that earned her the nickname "Miss Objective." She later spent two years as soloist with Oleg Lundstrem's jazz orchestra. Her 1986 song "Znayu, lyubil," with lyrics by Dzhuna, became a chart hit and a laureate of the Song of the Year festival. In 1997 she received a named star plaque on Moscow's Square of Pop Stars, and in 2019 she was awarded the title Merited Artist of the Russian Federation.
