History

Before the solo career there was Elektroklub, the late-1980s studio group where Irina Allegrova sang alongside Igor Talkov. She went out on her own at the start of the 1990s and found a persona that carried her for two decades: the Empress, imperious, belted, built out of costume and gesture. «Угонщица» (1994) is the record most people name first, a hard dance-pop stomp whose lyric is written from the position of the woman doing the taking rather than the one being left. «Младший лейтенант» works the same seam. The voice is full chest register with a wide vibrato and volume held in reserve, and the arrangements of the period are built to give it room: synth brass, a steady four-on-the-floor kick, keyboard strings. She still fills halls on that formula, and her ballads carry as much weight as the dance numbers.
