History

Invent Animate play atmospheric progressive metalcore in which dense, dissonant riffing and slide-tapped guitar lines sit inside a haze of reverb and ambient texture. The band formed in Port Neches, Texas, in 2011 and came up through the same wave of melodic, technical metalcore as Erra and Northlane, the acts they are most often compared with. Their early records, including Stillworld, came out on Tragic Hero Records and built a following on the contrast between crushing breakdowns and clean, melancholic choruses. A change at the microphone reshaped the band: founding vocalist Ben English left in 2018, and Marcus Vik, formerly of the Swedish group Aviana, joined in 2019. With him the vocals range from mid-pitched screams and low growls to sombre clean singing. Heavener, released in 2023 on UNFD, pushed the ambient side further, with long washes of sound between the heavy passages and songs that feel more like a single mood than a set of parts. Listeners recognise them by that pairing of weight and blur, heavy but rarely harsh.
