History

India.Arie writes from behind an acoustic guitar, and inside neo-soul that was the distinguishing choice. Most of the scene built on live band grooves and hip hop drum programming, while her arrangements start with fingerpicked chords and add the rhythm section around them, leaving a lot of space and keeping the vocal close and unprocessed. She sings conversationally rather than ornamentally, with very little of the melisma that dominated R&B radio at the time, and that restraint is the reason the words land. The subject matter is consistent: self-definition, the distance between appearance and worth, faith without a denomination attached. Video, from Acoustic Soul, is a flat refusal of the standards set by music television, and I Am Not My Hair makes the same argument more bluntly. Brown Skin shows the other register, slow and warm. She was raised in Atlanta, in the middle of the scene where neo-soul was being defined, and four Grammys came from work in that mode.
