History

Ihsahn is the solo project of the Norwegian musician best known as the singer and guitarist of Emperor, one of the founding bands of the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 1990s. He began releasing records under his own name in the mid-2000s and used them to stretch black metal well past its usual borders. After, from 2010, is often cited as the turning point: long, dense songs played on extended-range guitars, with free-blowing saxophone from Jørgen Munkeby of Shining cutting through the blast beats. Later albums kept moving. Arktis. in 2016 brought tighter songwriting and clean, almost progressive rock choruses, while Ámr in 2018 leaned into synthesisers and darker, slower atmospheres. Leprous served as his live band for years, which says a lot about the overlap between his work and modern progressive metal. What a listener recognises is the contrast: a shrieked black metal voice set against a clean baritone, cold tremolo riffs next to jazz harmony and orchestral colour, all held together by a composer who treats extreme metal as a starting point rather than a rulebook.
