History

i61 makes cloud rap soaked in 1980s neon: hazy synth pads, drum machines, reverb-heavy vocals and a cinematic, nocturnal mood that owes as much to retro film scores as to hip-hop. Born in Ufa, he came up through the local collective Dopeclvb, founded in 2012, and then through YungRussia, the loose crew that brought Russian cloud rap into view in the mid-2010s. His best-known work is the Shelby series, a run of conceptual releases started in 2014 and inspired by the video game Hotline Miami, with its violence, pastel colours and pulsing synthwave. Shelby, Vol. 1 and Shelby, Vol. 2 (Infinity) set the template, and the series continued with SHELBY 3 and beyond. He also recorded with Boulevard Depo on Rare Gods and has worked with Pharaoh. Later albums such as Angelwave and the autobiographical Storytell kept his interest in sound design and visuals. A listener recognises i61 by that washed-out retro glow and the sense of a story running under each track.
