History

Hooverphonic began in Belgium as a trip hop group and slowly turned into something closer to an orchestral pop band. The early records are built the way trip hop was: slow breakbeats, a bass line that sits far forward, cold keyboard textures and a female voice placed inside the arrangement rather than on top of it. "2Wicky" is that period at its most stark. From there the writing moved toward strings, brass and full arrangements, and "Mad About You" showed how far the band had travelled, a song with the swing of a film theme rather than a club track. The group has worked with a series of different lead singers over the years, and the sound survived each change because the writing and production hold the identity. Belgium later sent them to Eurovision, which introduced the band to listeners who had never heard the early material. What a listener recognises is the cinematic scale: an arrangement that sounds like a soundtrack cue with a pop vocal on it.
