History
Hooligan Hefs is one of the voices that carried Australian drill into the national mainstream. He comes from Doonside in Western Sydney, has Samoan, Indian and Chinese heritage, and began releasing music in the mid-2010s, first drawing attention as a featured artist before building his own run of singles. His sound sits on the drill template of sliding 808 bass, skittering hi-hats and dark, minor-key melodies, delivered in a thick Western Sydney accent with heavy use of local slang, but he has never stayed inside a single lane: his tracks borrow from grime, dubstep, EDM and hardstyle, which gives many of them a rave-like surge. No Effect in 2019 went platinum in Australia, and Send It! in 2020 became his biggest hit, certified multi-platinum and nominated for an ARIA Song of the Year award. He signed with a major label around then and kept working with other Western Sydney rappers and with artists from the UK and New Zealand. A listener recognises him by the energetic, almost chanted hooks, the local slang and beats that jump between drill menace and festival-size drops.
