History

Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir brought a Brooklyn energy to the urban choir sound of the nineties: fast handclap tempos, punchy call and response, a funky band and a leader who pushes the choir higher chorus by chorus. Walker, born in Brooklyn, built the choir around his ministry at Love Fellowship Tabernacle, the church he pastors. The live album was their natural format, and the records were made in front of audiences in different cities. Live in Atlanta at Morehouse College won the Grammy for Best Gospel Album by Choir or Chorus, and Love Is Live!, recorded with his younger LFT Church Choir, brought a second Grammy in the same category. Walker kept two ensembles on purpose: the Crusade Choir for the powerful traditional side, the LFT Church Choir for a more youthful sound open to hip-hop rhythms. His 2013 single Every Praise, a simple chant of names for God, became a modern church standard. Walker went on to become a bishop, and his choir records remain a reference for the big, joyful, city-church side of contemporary gospel.
