History

Helene Fischer took schlager, a German pop tradition often written off as safe, and gave it the production values and physical discipline of an international arena show. She was born in Siberia to a Russian German family and moved to Germany as a child, then trained in musical theatre, which is audible in everything: the breath control, the clean projection, the ability to hold a note steady while moving. Atemlos durch die Nacht is the song that made the genre unavoidable again, a four-on-the-floor pulse under a melody built to be sung by a stadium and a wedding party alike. Herzbeben and Achterbahn keep that formula and push the dance production further forward. What made her the biggest live act in the German-speaking market was the staging: aerial work, acrobatics and costume changes performed by the singer herself rather than by dancers around her. The voice is bright, precise and almost never strained, which is exactly what schlager asks for.
