History

Hatebreed turned metallic hardcore into arena-sized music, with simple chugging riffs, huge breakdowns and shouted, motivational lyrics built for crowd participation. The band came out of Connecticut in the mid-1990s, fronted by Jamey Jasta, and its debut Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire became a touchstone of the late-1990s hardcore scene. Perseverance, released in 2002 on a major label, carried that sound to a far wider metal audience, and The Rise of Brutality followed with the same blunt approach. Jasta also became a public figure beyond the band, hosting the MTV metal show Headbangers Ball for a time and running other projects. Later records such as The Divinity of Purpose kept the formula largely intact, which is part of the band's appeal: short songs, clear messages and riffs that land the moment the pit opens. A listener recognises Hatebreed by the thick, mid-tempo chug, gang-shouted choruses, Jasta's hoarse bark and lyrics about resilience, loyalty and pushing through adversity, delivered with the directness of a rallying cry rather than a story.
