History
Harakiri for the Sky play post-black metal built for long, heavy emotional arcs: fast, melodic tremolo riffing, steady mid-tempo drive and a desperate, hoarse vocal delivering lyrics about depression, loss and self-destruction. The project was founded in Austria in 2011 by two musicians, vocalist J.J. and multi-instrumentalist M.S., who writes the music, with guest and live players filling out the sound on record and stage. The band's songs regularly run well past eight or ten minutes, moving between walls of distorted guitar, clean melodic leads and quieter, almost post-rock passages without dropping the sense of despair. Albums such as III: Trauma in 2016, Arson in 2018 and the double-length Mære in 2021 made them one of the most prominent names in the European post-black scene of the decade, often mentioned alongside acts that fold shoegaze and post-rock into black metal. Listeners recognise them by the sheer length and density of the songs, catchy melodic guitar lines that repeat and build, and a voice that sounds pushed to its limit from the first line to the last.
