History

Born in Trinidad, raised in the United States and living in Germany by the time his records came out, Nestor Alexander Haddaway had one song that went everywhere. "What Is Love" appeared in 1993, produced under the names Dee Dee Halligan and Junior Torello. It runs on an organ stab hitting the offbeat at a tempo slower than most eurodance of the period, which leaves room for a warm, soul-leaning vocal instead of a shouted chant. That contrast is the whole record. The Album, released the same year, carried "Life" and "Rock My Heart", assembled from similar parts. Years later an American television sketch and the film that grew out of it put "What Is Love" back into circulation for a new audience, and it has stayed in clubs and on compilations since. Haddaway has toured the material for decades.
