History
H "Two" O are a British bassline duo remembered above all for What's It Gonna Be, the 2008 single that took the sound of Sheffield's underground clubs into the mainstream. Bassline had grown in the north of England from UK garage, keeping the skippy vocal hooks but swapping the swing for a pounding four-to-the-floor beat and fat, wobbling bass riffs, and for a while it lived mostly on pirate radio, CD mixes and packed club nights. What's It Gonna Be, made with the vocal group Platnum and released through Hard2Beat and Ministry of Sound, reached number two on the UK singles chart, was playlisted heavily on BBC Radio 1 and later went platinum. Critics were divided, some finding the garage-style beat and vocal too plain, but the record still became one of the defining bassline crossovers of that year. A listener recognises the H "Two" O sound by a bright, catchy female vocal hook, a buzzing organ-style bassline and a steady, dancefloor-first groove.
