History
GRiZ plays saxophone over his own electronic productions, pulling Motown soul, funk bass lines and disco horns into glitch hop and trap. He comes from Southfield, Michigan, just outside Detroit, and the city's soul and funk heritage runs through almost everything he makes. His debut, End of the World Party, came out in 2011 as a free download, and giving music away became part of his identity. He set up his own label, All Good Records, first called Liberated Music, to release his albums and those of like-minded artists. Mad Liberation (2012) and Rebel Era (2013) defined the trap funk sound: fat, bouncing drops, chopped soul samples and a live sax line leading the hook. Say It Loud and Good Will Prevail pushed further toward big-hearted, festival-ready songs, later followed by Ride Waves and Rainbow Brain. He has also teamed up with Gramatik as Big Grizmatik. On record you hear the wailing sax lead, sticky funk grooves and an upbeat, communal energy even in the heaviest bass moments.
