History

Gravediggaz turned horror-movie imagery into a vehicle for sharp, often philosophical East Coast rap. The group brought together producer Prince Paul, known for his work with De La Soul, the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, and rappers Frukwan and Poetic, each under a grave-themed alias: The Undertaker, The RZArector, The Gatekeeper and The Grym Reaper. Their debut 6 Feet Deep (1994) paired dusty, off-kilter beats and creepy samples with verses about death, madness and the grave, often used as metaphors for ignorance, poverty and spiritual awakening rather than simple gore. It became one of the defining records of horrorcore, even as the members themselves resisted the label. The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel (1997), with RZA more central to the production, leaned harder into social commentary. Poetic was diagnosed with cancer and died in 2001, and Nightmare in A-Minor was released after his death, carrying his final verses. The group is recognised by gothic, grimy boom-bap production, dark humour, and a rotating cast of rappers trading macabre, cerebral verses.
