History
Grave play the heaviest, murkiest version of early Swedish death metal. The band formed in Visby on the island of Gotland, taking the name Grave in 1988 after starting out as Corpse, and guitarist and vocalist Ola Lindgren has been the one constant member ever since. Where Stockholm peers leaned toward melody or rock swing, Grave went for weight: slow, crushing passages, downtuned guitars with the same thick buzzing distortion, simple brutal riffs and low, gurgling growls. Their early albums, starting with "Into the Grave" and continuing with "You'll Never See..." and "Soulless", built the reputation they still rest on, released through Century Media. The group went on hiatus in the late nineties and returned in the early 2000s with Lindgren leading a series of changing lineups and keeping the original sound alive. Grave is counted among the big four of Swedish death metal alongside Dismember, Entombed and Unleashed. Listeners recognise them by the sheer low end, the doom-heavy mid-tempo sections and the rotten, cavernous atmosphere of their early records.
