History

Gram Parsons chased a vision he called Cosmic American Music: classic honky-tonk and country soul played with the freedom and attitude of 1960s rock. Raised in the American South, he formed the International Submarine Band, then joined the Byrds for Sweetheart of the Rodeo, a record that pushed a major rock band deep into country. He went on to co-found the Flying Burrito Brothers, whose The Gilded Palace of Sin mixed pedal steel, soul influences and a rhinestone-suited image, and he spent time with the Rolling Stones, whose own country leanings of the period show his influence. His two solo albums, GP and Grievous Angel, paired him with the young Emmylou Harris, and their close duet harmonies became the heart of his late work. He died in 1973, before Grievous Angel was released. Listeners recognise him by the fragile, aching tenor, weeping pedal steel and fiddle, and songs that treat country heartbreak with a rock musician's sense of drift and excess.
