History
Googoosh became the central figure of Iranian pop in the decades before 1979, and the shape of that music is largely her doing. She started performing as a child and moved into film, and her records put Persian melodic phrasing and its ornamented turns over arrangements borrowed from European orchestral pop and French chanson, later adding funk and disco rhythm sections without losing the Persian line on top. The voice sits low and slightly husky, and her method is dynamic: she will drop almost to speech in a verse and then open the tone fully at the point where the lyric turns. Her styling was copied across the country as widely as her songs were sung. After the revolution she remained in Iran, unable to perform in public for over two decades because women were barred from solo singing before mixed audiences, and resumed concerts abroad only when she left in 2000. Listeners know her by that low, suddenly opening voice and by the melancholy sitting under even the bright songs.
