History

God Is an Astronaut mix post-rock guitars with synthesizers, programmed textures and heavy drums, producing a sound that sits between shoegaze haze and cinematic electronic music. Twin brothers Torsten and Niels Kinsella formed the band in 2002 in Glen of the Downs, County Wicklow, and have run it largely on their own terms, releasing much of their catalogue themselves. All Is Violent, All Is Bright (2005) is the album that spread their name internationally, with short, dramatic instrumentals where piano and synth pads open into walls of fuzz. Origins (2013) brought in more processed vocals and a denser, darker mix, and Epitaph (2018) turned inward, a sombre record shaped by grief. Across two decades the band has toured heavily in Europe and beyond and kept a steady identity. A listener recognises God Is an Astronaut by their compact track lengths for the genre, swirling reverb-heavy guitars, the constant presence of keyboards under the noise, and rhythms that hit with the weight of a rock band rather than drifting.
