History
Gloria Jones sang with a tough, gospel-trained voice, and she is best known for recording the original Tainted Love in 1964. Written by Ed Cobb, the song made little impact at first, but in the following decade it became a favourite of the Northern Soul scene in England, where its urgent beat and pleading vocal filled dance floors. That club afterlife is how Soft Cell came to know it before their 1981 synth-pop version made the song famous worldwide. Jones also worked as a songwriter at Motown, co-writing material for other artists, and released her own album Share My Love (1973) there, a lush, orchestrated soul record. In the 1970s she became the partner of Marc Bolan and joined T. Rex as keyboard player and backing singer. Vixen (1976), produced by Bolan, leaned toward funk and rock. She was driving the car in the 1977 crash in which Bolan was killed. A listener recognises her by the grit in her voice, the stomping tempo of Tainted Love and the fuller, strings-backed sound of her Motown work.
