History

Gigi D'Agostino built a dance sound around a single compressed lead synth and a tempo slower than the clubs around him were running. Coming out of the Italian scene of the 1990s, he worked with simple, nursery plain melodies, a heavy four to the floor kick and a saw lead squeezed until it distorts, then slowed the whole thing down. He gave the approach a name, lento violento, slow and violent, and it describes the records accurately: the pulse is unhurried but the sound is aggressive. L'Amour Toujours is the one that never left, a rising synth figure and a sung hook that European clubs, stadiums and radio have been recycling for decades. Bla Bla Bla stripped the idea further, built almost entirely on a filtered loop and a chanted vocal line. The Riddle took an older British pop song and rebuilt it as a dance record. Very little of the production is complex, and that is the point: the parts are few, loud and mixed so that a crowd can sing the lead line back.
