History

Gheorghe Zamfir made the Romanian pan flute, the nai, into a solo instrument recognised far outside its own tradition. He came to it through Romanian folk music, where the doina is a free, unmeasured lament with no fixed pulse, and that shape stayed with him even when the backing turned to orchestras and studio reverb. His technique rests on breath control that lets a line continue through what should be a pause, and on a sliding attack between notes that sounds closer to a voice than to a whistle. The Lonely Shepherd, also known in German as Einsamer Hirte, is the melody most listeners know, a slow theme over sustained strings that has been used in films and on television for decades and reached a new audience through Kill Bill. Doina de Jale keeps the older language intact: no fixed tempo, ornamentation carrying the emotion, silence used as part of the phrase. The tone is thin and breathy at the top and surprisingly heavy at the bottom, which is why it works as film music.
