History
Geto Boys turned Houston into a force in hip hop and pushed gangsta rap into its darkest, most psychological territory. The group came out of Rap-A-Lot Records, the Houston label run by J. Prince, and its classic line-up of Scarface, Willie D and Bushwick Bill, with DJ Ready Red on the early records, mixed brutal street tales with horror movie imagery and bleak humour. Grip It! On That Other Level in 1989 established that voice, and the violent, shocking content of their work caused controversy and distribution trouble with major labels around the turn of the decade. The 1991 album We Can't Be Stopped, with its notorious cover photo of Bushwick Bill after he was shot in the eye, contained "Mind Playing Tricks on Me", a paranoid, haunted track over a soft, looping guitar sample that is still one of the most admired songs in Southern rap. Scarface went on to a major solo career. Listeners recognise Geto Boys by the heavy Southern funk grooves, three very different voices and lyrics that dwell on guilt, madness and fear as much as on violence.
