History

The Georgia Mass Choir is a big-voiced Southern church choir built for congregational power: massed sopranos and altos answering a lead, a rolling rhythm section and songs that build from a testimony into a shout. The choir was formed in Macon, Georgia, in 1983 under Rev. Milton Biggham, who wrote much of its material and led from the front. Around 150 singers were picked from several hundred who applied, which gave the group its sheer weight of sound from the first record. Its debut, Yes, He Can, came out the same year on Savoy Records and reached the top five of the gospel album chart, and I Sing Because I'm Happy climbed to number two in 1992. The wider public met the choir in 1996, when it appeared in the Whitney Houston film The Preacher's Wife and sang at the Olympic Games in Atlanta; Houston and the choir shared an NAACP Image Award for gospel the following year. The Georgia Mass Choir belongs to the mass choir wave of the eighties and nineties, when regional ensembles recorded in the style of a Sunday service and sold it far beyond their home state.
