History
George Strait built a forty year career by refusing to change the arrangement. Fiddle and steel guitar stay in front, the tempo sits where a dance floor wants it, and the vocal is level, unhurried and free of any vibrato he does not need. He came up in Texas dancehalls with the Ace in the Hole Band, and that room is audible in everything he records: western swing shuffles, two steps, waltzes that a couple can actually dance to. Amarillo by Morning is the case people cite, a rodeo song carried by a fiddle line and a singer who underplays every loss in the lyric. When Nashville drifted towards rock production in the 1980s, he stayed with the older instrumentation and the traffic came to him instead. He accumulated more number one singles than any other artist on a Billboard chart, well past forty on the country side, without a reinvention or a scandal to explain it. All My Ex's Live in Texas shows the other half of the approach: humour delivered deadpan, over a band that never overplays.
