History

George Clanton writes vaporwave as full-blooded pop: breakbeats borrowed from nineties dance and trip-hop, washes of shoegaze guitar and synth, and his own reverb-drowned vocals carrying real hooks. The American musician worked earlier under other names, including ESPRIT 空想, whose Virtua.zip (2014) is a favourite of the scene's more nostalgic, cinematic side, before releasing records under his own name. 100% Electronica (2015) and especially Slide (2018) set out his style: songs that sound like half-remembered radio hits from a decade that never quite existed, with big drums and blurry, euphoric choruses. He also co-runs the 100% Electronica label, which gave a home to many artists from the same circle, and helped organise live events that turned an online genre into something people gathered for in person. A collaborative album with Nick Hexum of 311 followed in 2019. What marks Clanton is the tension in his sound, sharp modern drums under hazy, nostalgic textures, and the way he treats vaporwave as a songwriting language rather than a sample collage.
