History
Genticorum play traditional Quebecois music with a light, inventive touch, built on fiddle, wooden flute, guitar and the steady clatter of the players' own feet. The trio formed in Montreal in 2000 around fiddler and singer Pascal Gemme and guitarist Yann Falquet, who also plays jaw harp, with a wooden flute player completing the lineup; Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand held that role for many years. All three keep time with podorythmie, the seated foot-tapping that drives Quebec dance tunes, so the band sounds bigger and more percussive than three instruments suggest. Much of their tune repertoire comes from Gemme's own fiddle compositions and older material, while the songs often use traditional lyrics sung in call-and-response. They released albums including Malins Plaisirs (2005), La Bibournoise (2008) and Nagez Rameurs (2011) and toured widely. Genticorum belong to the generation that kept the Quebec tradition lively after La Bottine Souriante. They are recognised by the flute and fiddle twining together, the drone of guitar and the relentless rhythm of the feet.
