History

Gazpacho make slow-burning, melancholic art rock from Oslo, building nearly every album around a single story or idea. Their music is quiet more often than loud: piano and keyboard washes, clean guitar, violin, folk-tinged melodies and restrained drums, all framing the soft, aching tenor of singer Jan-Henrik Ohme. Early comparisons with later Marillion were common, and the band shared that group's taste for atmosphere over virtuosity. Across albums such as Night, March of Ghosts and Demon they developed a cinematic, almost theatrical approach: Night unfolds as one long nocturnal piece, March of Ghosts is a procession of stories told by the dead, and Demon circles around a mysterious manuscript and the idea of a presence that haunts human history. Arrangements grow gradually from whispers to dense, layered climaxes, with Nordic folk colour and choral textures running underneath. Their signature is in the sorrowful vocal lines, the long, patient song shapes, the prominent violin and keys, and a heavy, wintry melancholy that rarely breaks into outright aggression.
